What is Bidirectional Charging?
EV charging has traditionally been one-way, from a charging port in your home or garage to your vehicle’s battery. Bidirectional charging changes that by allowing electricity to flow in both directions, meaning that vehicles can discharge their battery to supply your home with power. This technology enables Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) functionality, allowing an EV battery to supply electricity to a house during outages, peak electricity pricing, or times when additional energy is needed.
V2H Bidirectional Charging: Vehicle-to-Home
V2H bidirectional charging essentially converts your car into a home battery system. This allows your EV to supply power to your home. In V2H, power flows directly from your EV to your home’s electrical panel, allowing you to power appliances, lights, HVAC systems, and anything else in your home. With V2H, you can pair your EV battery with your solar panels to store excess solar power during the day, and then discharge it in the evenings as needed. A complete V2H system typically includes a compatible EV, a bidirectional EV charger, and a home electrical system that is properly setup to accommodate a bidirectional system.
